Tips for photographing reflective surfaces like mirrors and chrome

Reflective objects can make a product image feel precise, luxurious, and highly considered. They can also expose every light source, mark, edge, and unwanted detail in the studio. A mirror may reflect the camera, while chrome can turn a softbox into a bright, distracting streak.

The most reliable approach is to stop treating reflections as a nuisance and start treating them as part of the composition. You are photographing the environment around the object as much as the object itself. Light placement, camera position, flags, and the visible size of each source determine what appears on the surface.

This matters across commercial still life, from polished electronics and watches to perfume bottles, kitchenware, wine accessories, and automotive details. A controlled setup produces cleaner files, more convincing materials, and far less retouching.

Why reflective objects are difficult

A matte surface scatters light in many directions, which makes it relatively forgiving. A glossy surface follows the rules of specular reflection: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
