A bright window can give a still life scene the clean, spacious quality clients often want, yet it can also become the brightest object in the frame. Once the outside view clips to white, nearby packaging loses shape, glass develops harsh reflections, and the subject may appear underexposed by comparison. A graduated neutral density filter offers a practical way to bring those competing tones closer together.

This is especially useful when photographing products beside a window rather than lighting an entire set in a studio. The approach preserves the direction and softness of natural light while reducing the exposure in only part of the image. With careful positioning, the filter can hold detail in the sky, buildings, or foliage beyond the glass without making the product look unnaturally dim.

Choosing The Right Graduated Filter

Avoid placing the transition across the main product. Even a soft edge can create a faint change in density across a label or reflective surface. Watch for the filter’s effect on vertical lines. Controlling Reflections And Colour

A graduated ND filter changes brightness, but it does not automatically control reflections. Move the product, camera, or light source to change what the glossy surface sees. Curtains and diffusion fabric are also useful when the window itself is visible in a reflective subject.
